Arising is an artist’s book by Moe Stroud that was created to be enjoyed by all ages, encouraging the reader to tap into their inner child. It tells two versions of the same lullaby, the original written by Matthias Claudius in 1779, and a contemporary rework by Moe written in 2018. To emphasize the changes in the lullaby, the two stories were layered over each other in some sections. Two sheets of colored acetate are provided to allow the viewer to read each lullaby individually. The green acetate allows the 2018 rendition to be emphasized, and the red acetate allows the 1779 original to be emphasized. On the pages opposite the lullaby are handcrafted spinners reminiscent of kaleidoscopes, a familiar children’s toy that many adults still enjoy in their later years. Arising was created to remind readers how to find fantasy and wonderment in their everyday lives.
